Kilt Society™ Essentials
Braemar Jacket & Vest
As kilt outfits become more and more popular, we are seeing new trends coming through in colour and style. This is an updated version of the Argyll jacket and is a versatile jacket and waistcoat (vest) to wear to formal or semi-formal events. Wear it without the waistcoat for more casual events. The jacket on its own also looks great with jeans and a shirt or sweater. As part of a complete kilt outfit, a full dress sporran will make it formal enough for a wedding or evening event.
The jacket is made in pure wool tweed, in a weave known as Arrochar or Araca tweed. The warp and weft have both grey and black threads, so that woven together the effect is a marled dark grey which is smooth to touch but has a textured appearance. The buttons are imitation horn which is following the traditional look for tweed jackets here in Scotland.
The cut is short and neat with double vents and tweed epaulettes, fixed with matching buttons. Front pockets have deep flaps with stitched lines and three small buttons. The pocket linings may be stitched closed when you get your jacket, but you can open these by carefully snipping this stitching. There is also one top pocket, but if it's stitched, you could leave this one closed to preserve the line of the jacket. There is an inside pocket too if you need more carrying space.
The sleeves (which come in a choice of three lengths) have a stitched-down cuff detail which runs up the forearm towards the elbow. It has the same stitched lines as the pocket flaps and each line (there are three in all) is finished with a button. This is one of the updated features of the contemporary jacket.
This outfit comes with a 5 button waistcoat (vest). Worn together, this makes a formal outfit. Adding a grey tartan kilt, full dress sporran and a ruched tie would make this a great outfit for a modern wedding. The waistcoat has back straps for an adjustable waistline and two shallow front pockets. Like the jacket pockets, these may be stitched closed and are often left closed to make the waistcoat look neat and fitted.
As grey becomes one of our most popular colours in tartans, the Grey Tweed Jacket and Waistcoat is becoming the most popular choice to create a modern kilt outfit.
